For this project, I read Emperor Haile Selassie's 1963 speech to the United Nations General Assembly to find four excerpts that best represented the world events of 2020. I then created a poster for each quote.
The posters feature a distressed look to capture the energy of that year. I photographed buildings with paint chips, dirt, and stains, using these textures as background elements. I adjusted the opacity to keep the focus on the quote, ensuring the textures were complemented rather than distracted.
I used a fine-point pen to create the scratchy and boxy lettering to match the gritty look of the posters. I then scanned the lettering into my computer and converted it into a vector in Illustrator. For some contrast, I used a font and hand lettering to emphasize certain lines in the quote.
